Near Hearst Castle, just outside San Simeon, California on beautiful Highway 1, is a reserve where the Elephant Seals go each year from January to March to mate. They lie on the beach most of the time in groups of several females with one male. It is very active and noisey. The females sleep with their pups, the males are busy mating and defending their females. Often the males have territory battles. They are spectacular mammals and fascinating to watch.
